Variety has spoken with Illumination and it shows at least in which year the Super Mario Bros. movie should see the light.

Super Mario Bros. is probably the most famous game series in the entire world. Everyone knows different stories about the moustache wearing and now ex plumber. Earlier this year it was already known that a new Super Mario Bros. movie was going to come.
The first thought were … oh .. please do not repeat a live action Mario movie because it was just plain bad. But at that time it already turned out to be an nimation and that the talented people of Illumination (from among others Minions / Despicable Me) would be involved.

In an interview with Variety, the earlier fiasco was discussed and how Chris Meledandri (Illumination) wants to prevent this by working closely with Shigeru Miyamoto.
It is and remains a fairly ambitious task. The challenge is to pick things up that are incredibly thin in original form and try to give it a superlative depth. And can do that without compressing the love of the fans in any way.
They have therefore decided to takenthe time to work this out together with Nintendo because the Super Mario Bros. movie should not be seen in cinemas until 2022.
