Sonic Team boss – Hedgehog Engine makes Sonic Frontiers run well

The release of Sonic Frontiers is upon us and everyone will be watching to see how well it functions on the Nintendo Switch.

Takashi Iizuka, the CEO of Sonic Team, was interviewed by Game Reactor to learn how Sonic Team managed to enable Sonic Frontiers to work smoothly across platforms. Iizuka emphasized that the game was created utilizing their proprietary Hedgehog Engine, which made its debut with the popular Sonic Generations in 2011 and has since been updated and optimized by the team. Iizuka claims that one advantage of the Hedgehog Engine is that it scales really well across different media.

He is convinced that Nintendo Switch users will be pleased with the final product.

What to expect from Sonic Frontiers

“Development on this enormously broad range of hardware is really difficult. The Hedgehog Engine is what we are utilizing, which is fantastic. In order to ensure that multiplatform production is as simple as possible, we have been utilizing the internally built Hedgehog Engine since Sonic Generations and have been improving it since 2010 while the game was under development. Additionally, we have been working to improve the engine’s multiplatform capabilities. And as we saw with Sonic Forces, we were able to develop a game for both high-end spec computers and machines with extremely low spec.

“Our artists produce a ton of high-caliber stuff, so if you have this fantastic high-end PC, that’s excellent. However, we also want to provide a similar gaming experience for Nintendo Switch users. We may not be utilizing the same high-end assets, but the Hedgehog Engine can shrink them down to a size where they will seem quite similar on a Nintendo Switch and a high-end PC.

Well more on the actual experience … later.
