According to Xavier Manzanares, the producer of Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, the game’s initial layout consisted of a grid similar to the one seen in the game that kicked off the series. Ubisoft decided to take a less restrictive strategy for the game’s sequel. The players were given greater control over the game, as opposed to being restricted to a grid.
In a previous edition of EDGE, Manzanares was quoted as saying that the grid system had been operational in 2018. However, the group ultimately decided to make some adjustments the next season.

In 2018, the grid was still in place. Throughout the course of the whole year, we were giving presentations to Nintendo and Ubisoft, and the grid structure and the cursor both remained unchanged. But in March or April of 2019, we came to the conclusion that we should break that system. This was [in part] because we felt that we had enough trust from Nintendo to control the characters directly while they were engaged in combat, and that we could therefore do things that perhaps in the past would not have been possible. Therefore, this explains why we went there.
Director Davide Soliani said further that in order to perfect the new system, a large number of prototypes and iterations were required. In an interview with the publication, he said that the squad “failed numerous times.
As for the grid that was included in the very first game, it would seem that it served to launch the brand with such success that even Nintendo was pleased by its performance. It was reported by Soliani that “Nintendo said that the cursor and grid mechanism was practically ‘automatic’ – they phrased it like that.”
