I would personally love a sort of open world Soulslike Metroidvania. Even though linear is good too I say open world because it could work just like it did with Simon's Quest. Just make it all tighter with less pointless spaces. Much more compact the way open worlds should be. Doesn't have to be open world though and it doesn't have to necessarily have any backtracking. I'd be fine with either a Castevania 1 or a Simon's Quest.
